Participation of the DAISSy Research Group in the 6-day Teacher Training event of the “CHOICE” European Research project

From 19th to 26th February 2023, the CHOICE Consortium gathered in Larissa (Greece) and participated in the Joint Short-Term Training of Trainers (“Train-the-Trainers”) action, which was hosted by the “Diofantos” Institute of Computing & Publishing Technology (ITYE) and was implemented in the framework of the “CHOICE: Citizenship Competences to Tackle Climate Changes” European Research Project. The purpose of the project is to support the development of civic skills in Primary and Secondary Education students, enabling them to contribute to the fight against climate change through the adoption of sustainable behaviors.

During the 6-day “Train-the-Trainers” action, the trainers from the collaborating institutions, i.e. the Institute of Computer Technology & Publications (ITYE) “Diofantos” in collaboration with the DeepBlue Research Center, as well as the Vocational Training Center and Training Consorzio Ro.Ma, coordinated experiential workshops for the fifteen (15) participating teachers from the 16th Primary School of Larissa (Greece), ARC School (Romania), Primary School in Janków Przygodzki (Poland), TEK Secondary School (Turkey) and the Istituto Magistrale Statale Giordano Bruno (Italy) on issues such as climate change and digital tools in the classroom, the use of simulators, games and carbon footprint tools in educational practice, planning and organizing science workshops at school, creating and editing videos, etc.

During the training, the participating teachers from each school took turns guiding the rest of the group in implementing experiments/labs related to the environment and climate change. Experiments were demonstrated, such as a small-scale water irrigation system from recycled objects, a water filtration experiment, calculating the annual energy consumption of our electronic devices, as well as our individual carbon footprint using online tools, as well as creating a body scrub through the use of coffee beans. All the above experiments will be implemented with the participation and active involvement of students in all partner schools.

Through their participation in this specific training event, the teachers of the partner schools have received the necessary knowledge and expertise to be able to proceed to the next major activity of the CHOICE project, which is the start of the piloting of a set of innovative laboratory training activities (educational paths) that have been developed by the members of the CHOICE Consortium for the students of the five cooperating schools and their families.

The “CHOICE: Citizenship Competences to Tackle Climate Changes” is a two-year project co-financed by the Erasmus+ program of the European Commission, under the action “Cooperation for Innovation and Exchange of Good Practices”. The DAISSy Research Group is the Greek partner of the consortium, which consists of a total of eight (8) partners from Italy, Poland, Turkey, Romania and Greece.

logo-tesiThe DAISSy Research Group of the Hellenic Open University (HOU) invites you to take part in the Webinars on Social Innovation, which are part of the European project “TESI: Education and Training in Social Innovation”, implemented by DAISSy-HOU as a partner in Greece.

TESI project is implemented by an interregional consortium of six (6) Universities and one (1)  Research Centre in five (5) countries of the Adriatic-Ionian region (Albania, Croatia, Greece, Serbia, and Slovenia), with the aim of designing a Transnational Joint Master Programme (JM) in the field of Social Innovation.

In particular, a series of six (6) webinars is launched that will take place during the period from 31 May to 23 June 2023, with DAISSy-HOU team  having the responsibility of their design and co-responsibility of their implementation. With each partner institution contributing its expertise, this collaborative effort will cover various aspects of Social Innovation in depth. The Webinars will address the evolving needs of diverse target groups, including students, academic staff, and public or private organizations. Through this comprehensive approach, TESI aims to provide a platform for meaningful learning, facilitating the exchange of ideas between academia and practice.

The DAISSy Research Group of the HOU launched its activities on establishing a Joint Master Programme in Social Innovation through the TESI project

The “TESI: Training and Education in Social Innovation” is a newly approved Interreg Adrion European co-funded project that aims at establishing a partnership to be working on the formulation of a Joint Master Programme (JMP) on Social Innovation.

The project focuses on developing competences and skills on social innovation through capacity building approaches, with an emphasis on the contemporary social challenges in public administration’s governance, such as the urban regeneration, social entrepreneurship, welfare and migration. In addition, it aims at establishing a network of Universities and research centers, in order to define and implement the JMP.

More precisely, the main outputs of the TESI project include the creation of an innovative transnational network of Universities, research institutions and business organisations working in the field of social innovation, and the design of a Strategy and an Action Plan for the development of the JMP in Social Innovation. The future Master will award a degree from at least two (2) partner Universities. The programme envisages funded mobility schemes to partner universities and includes also a training/internship period, so that to allow students writing their thesis in a real-life working or research context.

The TESI implementation was launched at its online kick-off meeting, that took place on the 9th of February 2023 and was organized by the University of Bologna (Department of Political Science). Τhe DAISSy Research Group of the HOU, the Greek project partner, actively participated at the meeting and was represented by its Director Prof. Achilles Kameas and Dr Sissie Theodosiou, Social Anthropologist, Project Manager and Senior Researcher of DAISSy.

Furthermore, the successive online meetings provided the TESI partnership with the floor for discussing the crucial details and top priority on-going issues of the project implementation.

Within this context, the 1st TESI Study Visit became a reality! It was implemented on 27-29 March 2023 and was organized by the University of Zagreb (Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences),  in Croatia. It aimed at further strengthening all partners’ expertise and mutual knowledge, in order to start designing the JMP and to plan the related activities, such as the Webinars on Social Innovation and the Summer School. The DAISSy- HOU was represented in the 1st Study-Visit by its Director, Prof. Achilles Kameas and Dr Sissie Theodosiou, Social Anthropologist, Project Manager and Senior Researcher of DAISSy, who were actively involved in all study-visit’s activities and had the opportunity to exchange thoroughly, taking into account its know-how and the project tasks.

The TESI partners have already started the research activities by collecting the existing educational offers on Social Innovation across the Interreg Adrion geographical area of intervention. In addition, the process of engaging relevant stakeholders (such as Universities, Research Centres, Business organisations, SMEs working in the field of Social Innovation, etc.) in the TESI partnership, is already on its way.

It is noteworthy, that DAISSy-HOU will be involved in the implementation of all TESI deliverables, having the responsibility for a series of six thematic Webinars that aim to offer a training opportunity for different target groups and to address different topics related to Social Innovation. The Webinars will be held mainly by practitioners and discussed by a group of experts including University professors.

The DAISSy research group of the Hellenic Open University participated in the 2nd Transnational Partners Meeting of the “Innovation Station” project in Warsaw

Innovation Station -logoOn 29th and 30th March 2023, the 2nd Transnational Partners’ Meeting (TPM) of the European project “Innovation station: a new approach towards online and blended education” took place in Warsaw (Poland), hosted by IF, project partner.

The project’s main objective is to connect the students and the teachers across Europe so that they join forces and find solutions to the everyday challenges of online and blended learning.

During the TPM, the OBESSU, coordinator of the Innovation Station project, made an overview of the project’s work and management. In this context, the administrative and financial issues of the project were reviewed and discussed and both the progress in terms of quality assurance and the dissemination and promotion activities of the project were presented.

This was followed by a discussion on the content of the guidelines and the training of the teachers. In particular, Euroclio, project partner, presented the draft guidelines for teachers, on which the other partners are expected to provide their comments.

Subsequently, the EGInA project partner presented the stages of the selection and training of teachers, including the criteria for the selection of participants and the agenda of the training program.

In addition, IF, project partner, and leader of WP 4, presented the Massive Open Online Course-MOOC platform, describing the material and content, such as the recorded videos, subtitles, audio files in all languages of the consortium, etc. Through a very productive brainstorming and discussing, all partners agreed on the general framework and structure of the MOOC platform and set future deadlines.

The last important point of the meeting was to report on the steps regarding the policy proposals for a more effective online education and teaching, with an emphasis on ensuring that the proposals are credible and comprehensive.

All partners participated in the two-day discussions with great attention and a spirit of collaboration. The TPM was an opportunity for the partners to meet again, after the first transnational meeting in Brussels (Belgium).

The DAISSy Research Group of the Hellenic Open University (HOU), the Greek partner, was represented by Ms Panagiota Zafeiropoulou, Project Manager and Researcher of DAISSy, who actively participated in all sessions of the 2nd TPM and exchanged on the progress of the project implementation.

The “Innovation station” is a two-year project co-funded by the European Commission’s Erasmus+ program, under the “Partnerships in School Education” action. The project consortium consists of five (5) partners from Belgium, Italy, Poland, the Netherlands and Greece, and DAISSy Research Group of the Hellenic Open University (HOU) is the Greek partner.

During the online workshop, participants will have the opportunity to get acquainted with circular economy and entrepreneurship, as well as with the digital tools and the training programme developed by the RE-START project, aiming at supporting potential start-uppers in the field of circular economy.

The main objective of RE-START project is to empower higher education students to acquire and cultivate basic skills and competencies in order to adopt an environmentally friendly approach in their efforts to create a start-up. The project encourages and guides them to develop a circular start-up, or to transform their business idea into a circular one, following the definition of circular start-ups. The ultimate goal of the project is the commercialization of innovative business ideas in the field of circular economy through the development of University spin-offs.

The RE-START is a two-year project co-funded by the European Commission’s Erasmus+ programme. The DAISSy Research Group of the Hellenic Open University is the Greek partner of the consortium, which consists of a total number of six (6) partners from Cyprus, Portugal, Spain, Poland and Greece.

The DAISSy Research Group of the HOU participated in the final transnational partners’ meeting of the TEGA project, in London

logo-tegaOn 4th and 5th April 2023, the partners of the TEGA – Training the Educators to facilitate the teaching and assessment of abstract syllabus by the use of serious GAmes European project, met in London, hosted by London South Bank University (LSBU), project coordinator. During this last Transnational Partners’ Meeting (TPM), the project outputs and deliverables were reviewed and the work plan for the preparation of the final project report was set.

Specifically, during the TPM, Mr Joel Balkwill presented a series of good practices related to the SPIRAL community activities. Additionally, various cases of game-based teaching were presented by Mr Dan Barnard, Dorota Uptas-Tworek and Mark Winter, professors at LSBU. The interactive application that was developed for the TEGA Toolkit, was presented by Mr. Theodor Smith, student at LSBU.

The DAISSy Research Group of the Hellenic Open University (HOU), project partner, participated in the final TPM and was represented by Mr. Rizos Chaliampalias, Researcher of DAISSy and Ms. Vicky Maratou, Project Manager and Researcher of DAISSy, who presented the TEGA Community of Practice online platform.

The TEGA project was completed on the 18th April 2023 and its main objective was to develop a game-based teaching strategy to change traditional pedagogical practices in Higher Education. This approach is expected to improve the academic skills of lecturers in Universities, as well as the learning process of their students.

All TEGA deliverables are available on the project’s website, specifically on the Results page. The DAISSy-HOU developed the TEGA Community of Practice online platform, which facilitates the creation of a pan-European network of people who develop games and implement game-based educational practices. It is worth noting that the participation in the TEGA Community of Practice is free of charge and can be done through a simple registration. In this way, each registered member is then able to freely navigate through the platform’s information and educational material, to participate in communications with other members and to download materials.

TEGA was a thirty-month project, co-funded by the European Union, under the Erasmus+ Programme, Strategic Partnerships in Higher Education, Key Action 2. It was implemented by a consortium of four (4) Universities from four (4) countries (UK, Lithuania, Portugal, Greece) with the DAISSy Research Group of the HOU being the Greek partner.

The DAISSy Research Group of the HOU organized the 2nd transnational partners’ meeting of the european project “CLIP: Critical visual media Literacy and emPowerment”

CLIP-logoThe second (2nd) Transnational Partners’ Meeting (TPM) of the ‘CLIP: Critical visual media Literacy and emPowerment’ european co-funded project took place on the 27th and 28th of April 2023 in Athens (Greece).

The CLIP project aims to strengthen the digital capabilities of the Higher Education (HE) sector by boosting the resilience to information overload, manipulation and polarization, mitigating the risks of bias in visual representations by providing young people (within and outside Universities) with the capacity to critically understand media and images and the way those are used in education, news and online narratives.

The 2nd TPM was hosted by the DAISSy Research Group of the Hellenic Open University (HOU), with the participation of the project Coordinator, UNIMED – UNIONE DELLE UNIVERSITA DEL MEDITERRANEO (Italy), as well as all the partners: LIBERA UNIVERSITA DI LINGUE E COMUNICAZIONE-IULM (Italy) and ALL DIGITAL (Belgium).

During the TPM, the partnership had the opportunity to thoroughly discuss and make a detailed work plan of the upcoming project activities, such as the:

  • Finalisation of the research activities and planning the valorisation of their report
  • Agreement on the instructional design for the online course (WP3)
  • Planning the division of work for the course production, and overall
  • Planning in detail all the activities for the next 6 months.

The CLIP is an eighteen-month project co-funded by the ERASMUS+/KA220-HED – Cooperation partnerships in Higher Education Program of the European Union. The DAISSy Research Group of the HOU will ensure the effective implementation of the project activities in Greece, has the responsibility for the WP3 Micro Learning Course on Critical Visual Media Literacy and Fluency and its piloting in its Institution as well as the respective assessment and evaluation process.

The DAISSy Research Group of the HOU organized the transnational, online Training of the “Green Learning Community” project

On the 24-26 April 2023, the DAISSy Research Group of the Hellenic Open University (HOU) organized a three sessions, transnational, online Training on video production and editing in the framework of the “GREELCO: Green Learning Community” European Union (EU) co-funded project. 

The trainees have been preschool teachers, Directors, and/ or counselors at Kindergartens from Romania, Belgium, Estonia, Slovenia, Serbia, Czechia, and North Macedonia. 

During the first session, the trainees were introduced to video editing and learned how to download a free editing program and how to prepare the footage for editing. 

On the second Training session, the participants had the opportunity to discover the editing workspace program and use its basic tools.  The main objective of this session was to understand and familiarize themselves with the workspace of the editing program and to use specific tools for the basic editing of a video, such as: importing footage, selecting clips, cutting, copying, pasting, resizing, etc. 

greelco-1On the last day, the trainees exercised the basic editing tools and produced their own final video. Specifically, it was the participants‘ first attempt to create a video for setting the stage for a learning session using the basic editing tools to edit titles, subtitles and music, and to export a High Quality video for online use.

The DAISSy research group of the HOU is the project partner responsible for both providing constant technical support to the childcare centers regarding the preparation and the design of their virtual Study Visits’ videos and for the technical design, development and piloting of the GREELCO educational platform. 

The GREELCO is a two-year, ERASMUS+/ KA220-HED co-funded project. Its consortium includes three (3) main partners, namely the: Educational Research Institute (ERI) (Slovenia), the International Step by Step Association (ISSA) (Netherlands), and the Hellenic Open University (Greece), as well as eight (8) Kindergartens, namely the: Elmer (Belgium), Kindergarten Šestajovice (Czech Republic), Tartu Lasteaed Pääsupesa (Estonia), Pitypangos Közösségért Alapítvány (Hungary), JUODG Femo Kulakov (Republic of North Macedonia), Granidita CU Program Prelungit nr.22 Botosani (Romania), Vrtec Bled (Slovenia),  Predskolska Ustanova “Cukarica”(Serbia).

The multiplier event of the BIBLIO project organised by DAISSy Research Group-HOU in Patras (Greece), was a real success!

biblio-logoThe multiplier event in Greece, entitled “The new roles of the Library Community within the digital era“, was a very successful initiative! It was organised onsite (“My Way” hotel, Patras, Greece) and remotely (via the Zoom platform) on 24th April 2023 by the DAISSy Research Group of the Hellenic Open University (HOU), within the framework of the implementation of the “BIBLIO: Boosting digital skills ad competencies for librarians in Europe” EU project. It triggered the interest of library professionals, experts and practitioners, representatives of authorities and institutions, active citizens, and, more generally, anyone interested in the digital evolution within the library world.

More precisely, the dissemination event included six (6) speeches and a video presentation attended by more than forty five (45) participants and addressed the multiple challenges and the significant opportunities of the librarian community in the digital era, as identified through the BIBLIO project outcomes.

Prof Achilles KAMEAS, Director of DAISSy and Scientific Coordinator of the BIBLIO project in Greece, launched the event by welcoming the participants and presenting the valuable work done by the DAISSy Research Group of the HOU. The map of currently ongoing projects was impressive – he emphasised the strong international character of the Group and its involvement and representation in global networks and scientific boards. He also addressed the firm links achieved by DAISSy to relate the BIBLIO project with other ongoing EU projects under implementation (such as NICHE, T4SVEN, etc.), aiming to produce a net for the transfer of results and the enhancement of sustainability.

Then Ioanna SEFERLI, a Librarian, representing the Distance Library and Information Centre of the HOU (DLIC-HOU), delivered a speech about the activities of this unit. She presented the Centre’s e-services and pinpointed the extrovert nature of the DLIC operation in supporting both numerous initiatives of the Academic Libraries in Greece and projects carried out by the Schools and Research Groups of the HOU. In parallel, she explained the role of the DLIC of the HOU as the fundamental associate partner of the DAISSy Research Group for implementing the BIBLIO project in Greece.

The Project Manager of BIBLIO and Researcher of DAISSy-HOU, Fotini GATOMATI, took the floor and triggered the participants’ interest in the project’s content and its methodology. Through a brief presentation of all BIBLIO outputs and deliverables, she emphasised the demanding project concept, its solid European partnership, and its direct link with the needs and challenges of the modern library world. She showcased how two new job profiles emerged and presented the expected multiple roles of the Community Engagement and Communication-CECO and the Digital Transformation Facilitator-DIGY. She analysed the practical way that the BIBLIO project addressed the identified challenges and provided tools that benefited the personal development of the library professionals. She also emphasised the recognition of the importance of BIBLIO in the context of the project’s joint networking action with the European Parliament, which was hosted by Mr Marc Angel, Luxembourg MEP (on 28th March 2023 at his office in Brussels) and succeeded in presenting to the representatives of the European Parliament, both the results of the BIBLIO project and the policy recommendations regarding the new roles of the Library community in the digital era.

Then, Leonidas PAPACHRISTOPOULOS, Librarian at DLIC-HOU, presented the BIBLIO Massive Open Online Course-MOOC in detail, emphasising how it is linked with the tasks of the new job role profiles of the CECO and the DIGY so that to address them effectively. All BIBLIO MOOC modules were briefly described, including the timetable, study effort and benefits. Leonidas also referred to the multi-dimensional content of the BIBLIO blended training course training program by explaining that the MOOC is part of the modular training programme, which included the Specialization Courses and the pilot learning actions in the Libraries’ workplace (Work-Based Learning). Given his role as a trainer, he described the interest of the library professionals who participated in the training activities and the undeniably positive impact of this activity on their professional development.

The last speech of the event was delivered by Prof Maria Hatzinikolaou, a Professor of HOU and the Deputy Scientific Coordinator of the BIBLIO project in Greece. She referred to the digital transformation of libraries and the role lifelong learning plays in developing the modern skills of professionals in the field. Given the transition from a book-centric role to the technological trends of machine learning and digital literacy, the speaker emphasised the relationship achieved among the DAISSy Research Group and the DLIC-HOU towards the promotion and the exploitation of both the BIBLIO MOOC and the rest of the project deliverables.

The speeches concluded with a video showing the experience of Library professionals based on their participation in BIBLIO and describing the project’s impact on their professional development and the management of the current challenges of the Library sector.

A brief but vivid discussion took place at the end of the event through the participants’ exchange of questions-answers, comments and interventions. More precisely, they acknowledged the current role of the Library, the need for the digital autonomy of the library professionals and the new skills for coping with the challenges of serving their library users through a holistic approach, they made positive remarks on the BIBLIO deliverables and its strong impact, and they expressed their interest in a new second phase and continuation.

The national multiplier event for promoting the BIBLIO results was organised in Greek, with no participation fees, and the participants received certificates of attendance.

The DAISSy Research Group of the Hellenic Open University (HOU), Coordinator of the event, is thankful to all organisations that supported the event (especially the DLIC-HOU being the associate partner), as well as the speakers, the experts and every participant for their contribution to the success of the organisation.

Στο πλαίσιο της εκδήλωσης θα παρουσιαστούν τα αποτελέσματα του Ευρωπαϊκού έργου “BIBLIO: Boosting digital skills and competences for Librarians in Europe” το οποίο αντιμετώπισε το χάσμα δεξιοτήτων στον τομέα της Βιβλιοθήκης εξαιτίας του ψηφιακού μετασχηματισμού, που αλλάζει το ρόλο των Βιβλιοθηκών και των επαγγελματιών στον τομέα αυτό.

Έμφαση θα δοθεί στην παρουσίαση του Μαζικού Ανοικτού Διαδικτυακού Μαθήματος (Massive Open Online Course–MOOC) για την ανάπτυξη των ικανοτήτων που περιλαμβάνονται στα δύο  αναδυόμενα προφίλ εργασιακών ρόλων στο χώρο των Βιβλιοθηκών, δηλαδή του-της Υπεύθυνου-ης Επικοινωνίας και Συμμετοχικότητας της Κοινότητας (Community Engagement and Communication Officer-CECO και του-της  Διαμεσολαβητή-τριας Ψηφιακού Μετασχηματισμού (Digital Transformation Facilitator-DIGY), καθώς και στην εμπειρία της υλοποίησης του μεικτού εκπαιδευτικού προγράμματος ειδίκευσης (Specialisation Course) και των πιλοτικών ενεργειών μάθησης στο χώρο εργασίας των Βιβλιοθηκών.

Η συμμετοχή στην εκδήλωση είναι δωρεάν και θα δοθούν βεβαιώσεις παρακολούθησης.

Δίνεται η δυνατότητα διαδικτυακής συμμετοχής, μέσω της ηλεκτρονικής πλατφόρμας zoom.

Σημειώνεται, ότι το Ευρωπαϊκό έργο “BIBLIO: Boosting digital skills and competences for Librarians in Europe” ξεκίνησε το Νοέμβριο 2019 και ολοκληρώνεται τον Απρίλιο 2023, με συγχρηματοδότηση από το πρόγραμμα ERASMUS+ (612411-EPP-1-2019-1-IT-EPPKA2-SSA) της Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωσης, Συντονίζεται από το Πανεπιστήμιο Aldo Moro Μπάρι (Ιταλία) και υλοποιείται από εννέα-μελές εταιρικό σχήμα, σε πέντε Ευρωπαϊκές χώρες (Ιταλία, Βουλγαρία, Λετονία, Βέλγιο, Ελλάδα.).

Η Ερευνητική Ομάδα DAISSy του Ελληνικού Ανοικτού Πανεπιστημίου υλοποιεί το έργο BIBLIO ως φορέας-εταίρος στην Ελλάδα και η Εξ Αποστάσεως Βιβλιοθήκη & Κέντρο Πληροφόρησης του ΕΑΠ υποστηρίζει ενεργά την υλοποίηση κι εμπλέκεται στις δράσεις του έργου, ως βασικός συνεργάτης
