With the successful organization and implementation of the Multiplier Event entitled “Empower Girls’ Creativity Through Use of Digital Technologies”, the DAISSy research group of the Hellenic Open University (HOU) completed the activities of the “SparkDigiGirls: Empower Girls’ Creativity Through Use of Digital Technologies“ European project. The event took place on-site on July 12 2023, at the “Byzantino” Hotel in Patras, Greece.

The SparkDigiGirls aims at encouraging girls to explore digital technologies such as AR (Augmented Reality), VR (Virtual Reality), AI (Artificial Intelligence), IoT (Internet of things) and come up with new and exciting ideas by utilizing their newly acquired digital knowledge to chart the waters of the male-dominated STEM industry with fresh, different, and creative viewpoints.

The event was addressed to teachers, vocational education and training providers, apprenticeship advisors, vocational training teachers, IT solutions providers, Government representatives, University representatives, students e.t.c..

The launching speech was delivered by Achilles Kameas, Professor of HOU and Director of DAISSy, who presented the activities of the Research Group and emphasized on its valuable projects and their impact on society. Then, Mr. Konstantinos Potsis, Project Manager of DAISSy, introduced the agenda of the event to the audience and briefly explained the aim of the SparkDigiGirls EU project.

Furthermore, Mrs Evgenia Pierri, Director of the Directorate of Secondary Education of Achaia (Prefecture at the Region of Western Greece-RWG), held the session entitled “Women’s participation in information and communication technologies (ICT) – The role of secondary education”, by elaborating on the gender gap of women’s participation rate in ICT and STEM professions, the role of the secondary education in closing this gap, and the measures already taken or planned by the Directorate, towards this direction.

The sessions continued by Pr. Fotis Lazarinis, Researcher of DAISSy, presenting the SparkDigiGirls project, its activities and deliverables, namely:  the “Twofold analysis of ways how innovative technologies may develop creativity of girls”, the “Unleash your creativITy with technology” online learning program, the “Digital Female Role Model Campaign” and the “Guidebook to empower youth workers as mentors to pursue girls’ creativity through usage of digital applications”. It is worth mentioning that twelve (12) youth workers/secondary education teachers and sixty five (65) girls were engaged in the project activities in Greece, who participated in the “Unleash your creativITy with technology” online learning program, and are school students at the Achaia (Prefecture at the RWG), the city of Agrinio (Prefecture of Etoloakarnania of the RWG) and the city of Mytilene (at the Lesvos Island of North Aegean). In addition, inspirational videos of women with a leadership role in the IT, created during the “Digital Female Role Model Campaign”, were presented.

A joyful part of the event was the following presentation from the group of teachers and students from the 6^th General Highschool of Patras, who won the educational trip to Ljubljana, Slovenia! This was the award of the evaluation process of their performance in the SparkDigiGirls online learning program. The winners shared their experiences and explained how their involvement in the project expanded their horizons.

Emphasis was put to the firm links of SparkDigiGirls with two other EU projects currently ongoing by DAISSy-HOU on STEM education i.e. SpicE: Special Education STEAM Academy and NEFELE: Neet prevention in Educational systems through positive Future vision Enhancing Learning and teacher Education, that were presented respectively,  by Mrs Natalia Spyropoulou and Mrs Vasiliki Takouli, Project Managers of DAISSy-HOU.

An interactive and interesting discussion with the audience followed the speeches, regarding suggestions on activities to motivate girls to take part in STEM-STEAM, just before the ceremony on commendations awarded to the schools and the teachers, involved in the “Unleash your creativITy with technology” learning program.

More precisely, the following schools obtained an award for participation in the SparkDigiGirls learning program: Vocational High School of Paralia Patras, 6^th General High School of Patras, General High School of Dafni Kalavryta, 5^th General High School of Agrinio, 2^nd Vocationa High School of Agrinio and Model Experimental High School of Mytilene.

The multiplier event ended in a pleasant atmosphere with the participants expressing positive remarks for the implementation of such projects and their willingness to be actively involved in initiatives of this kind, in the future.

The SparkDigiGirls is a two-year project, funded by the European framework ERASMUS+ and implemented by a consortium of six (5) partners representing six (4) European countries (Greece, Lithuania, Slovenia, Portugal), with the DAISSy Research Group of the HOU, being the Greek partner. The Research Group participates in all work packages of the SparkDigiGirls project and is responsible for the coordination of the development of the “Guidebook to empower youth workers as mentors to pursue girls’ creativity through usage of digital applications”.

The DAISSy Group of Hellenic Open University successfully organized the most recent partners’ meeting for the Erasmus+ project SparkDigiGirls. The meeting was held in Athens, 07-08 June 2022, and was attended by representatives from every member of the project Consortium. It was the first time in 2022 that we managed to meet each other live, despite the ongoing challenges caused by the lingering pandemic.

Guided by the project Coordinator, “Viesieji internet prieigos taskai” / “Rural Internet Access Points, there was a comprehensive discussion on both days of the meeting.

On the first day, after a short review of our joint activities so far, we talked about our current commitments: we have been developing online courses to aid young girls familiarize themselves with modern digital technologies and to exercise their creativity, finding solutions to practical problems and acquiring skills in areas typically preferred by boys. Every partner is responsible for producing innovative educational material on two relevant subjects (e.g. artificial intelligence, robotics), combining interesting theory and fun applications that will be available completely free of charge via a dedicated e-platform! We exchanged useful ideas, we paid attention to possible risks and we tried the online learning platform on the spot.

On the second day, we talked about evaluating learning outcomes. We wish to make sure that girls following our online curriculum will actually gain knowledge by trying our material, and we think that elements of gamification will be very useful in keeping them interested. Afterwards, we talked about the next steps of the project: the pilot run of our platform during the upcoming autumn and a subsequent female role model campaign; we plan to launch a campaign of job orientation to encourage girls towards the still male-dominated STEM and ICT fields – the campaign will focus on stories of women who have achieved success in their careers.

The meeting was concluded with a summary of administration and management issues, as well as everybody’s renewed promise to continue our work with the same enthusiasm and inspiration!

Mε μεγάλη επιτυχία ολοκληρώθηκε το διαδικτυακό στρογγυλό τραπέζι εμπειρογνωμόνων με θέμα «Τρόποι ενδυνάμωσης των κοριτσιών για την αύξηση του ενδιαφέροντος τους για τις ψηφιακές τεχνολογίες», το οποίοδιοργανώθηκε από τηνερευνητική ομάδα DAISSy του Ελληνικού Ανοικτού Πανεπιστημίου τη Δευτέρα 20 Σεπτεμβρίου 2021, στο πλαίσιοτου έργου SparkDigiGirls που χρηματοδοτείται από το πρόγραμμα Erasmus+ /Key Αction2 /Cooperation for innovation and the exchange of good practices.

Το έργο «SparkDigiGirls: Empower Girls’ Creativity Through Use of Digital Technologies» στοχεύει στην ενδυνάμωση της δημιουργικότητας των κοριτσιών ηλικίας 15 ετών και άνω μέσω της χρήσης ψηφιακών τεχνολογιών όπως AR, VR, AI, IoT. Συμμετέχουν, επίσης, οι φορείς  Asociacija “Viesieji interneto prieigos taskai” (Rural Internet Access Points) και Informaciniu Technologiju Instituta (Λιθουανία),  Instituto Politecnico de Tomar (Πορτογαλία) και Simbioza Genesis Social Entreprise (Σλοβενία).

Στο στρογγυλό τραπέζι συζητήθηκαν οι βασικοί παράγοντες που εμποδίζουν τα νεαρά κορίτσια να εξερευνήσουν επαγγελματικές σταδιοδρομίες στην επιστήμη των υπολογιστών και την τεχνολογία καθώς και τρόποι και προοπτικές αντιμετώπισης του προβλήματος.

Τη συζήτηση που συντόνισε  ο Χρ. Μπεχλιβάνος από το larissanet άνοιξε ο Αχιλλέας Καμέας, Καθηγητής του ΕΑΠ, Διευθυντής της ερευνητικής ομάδας DAISSy.

Τα βασικά  ερωτήματα της συζήτησης ήταν τα εξής:

• Ποιοι είναι οι ανασταλτικοί παράγοντες που επηρεάζουν τη χαμηλή συμμετοχή και το ενδιαφέρον των κοριτσιών/γυναικών για τις ψηφιακές τεχνολογίες; Τι άλλαξε τα τελευταία χρόνια ;
• Ποιες  είναι μερικές από τις πιο αποτελεσματικές προσεγγίσεις/ τρόποι  αύξησης του ενδιαφέροντος των κοριτσιών και των γυναικών για τις τεχνολογίες; Ποιοι οι στόχοι και προτεραιότητες; Ποιοι/ες, ειδικότερα, έχουν την  ευθύνη ; Πώς πρέπει να συνεργαστούμε για τη βελτίωση της κατάστασης;
• Υπάρχουν  συγκεκριμένα δείγματα έργων, πρωτοβουλιών, μαθησιακών προγραμμάτων που συνέβαλαν στην αύξηση του ενδιαφέροντος των κοριτσιών και των γυναικών για τις τεχνολογίες; Ποια είναι αυτά; Πως θα μπορούσαμε να τα διδαχτούμε από αυτά  ώστε να προκειμένου να αυξηθεί το ενδιαφέρον των κοριτσιών για τις ψηφιακές τεχνολογίες;

Οι συμμετέχοντες/ουσες στη συζήτηση εξέφρασαν τη διαχρονικότητα της διάκρισης που υφίστανται οι γυναίκες στη βάση του φύλου και διαπίστωσαν ότι σημαντικοί παράγοντες είναι ο ταυτόχρονος διπλός ρόλος των γυναικών (σπίτι και εργασία), τα υφιστάμενα κοινωνικά στερεότυπα, αλλά και τα μηνύματα που λαμβάνουν τα νεαρά κορίτσια (στο σπίτι, στο σχολείο και στην κοινωνία) αναφορικά με τις δυνατότητες σταδιοδρομίας. Τονίστηκε ότι τα επαγγέλματα που σχετίζονται με τις ψηφιακές τεχνολογίες παρέχουν ευέλικτες μορφές εργασίας και δημιουργικότητα, συνεπώς δεν υφίστανται εγγενείς παράγοντες που αποτρέπουν τη συμμετοχή των γυναικών. Συνεπώς, απαιτείται, μεταξύ άλλων, ενθάρρυνση των γυναικών και εξάλειψη της ανδροκεντρικής οπτικής αναφορικά με τον τρόπο περιγραφής των επαγγελμάτων, των καθηκόντων, ακόμη και των ίδιων των αλγορίθμων.

Οι πληροφορίες και τα συμπεράσματα του στρογγυλού τραπεζιού θα χρησιμοποιηθούν για την κατάλληλη διαμόρφωση των δραστηριοτήτων του έργου, οι οποίες περιλαμβάνουν διαδικτυακή κατάρτιση των κοριτσιών και των μεντόρων/-ισσων, ώστε να συμβάλλουν στα αναμενόμενα αποτελέσματα του έργου που είναι πολυδιάστατα όχι μόνο για τους συμμετέχοντες οργανισμούς,  τα κορίτσια ηλικίας 15 ετών  και άνω και τους νέους και τις νέες μέντορες και μεντόρισσες αλλά και το εκπαιδευτικό προσωπικό της δευτεροβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης και τους φορείς της (Γυμνάσια και Λύκεια, ΠΕΚΕΣ, φορείς χάραξης εκπαιδευτικής πολιτικής κ.λπ.).

Η ερευνητική ομάδα DAISSy του ΕΑΠ συμμετέχει στο Ευρωπαϊκό έργο «Empower Girls’ Creativity Through Use of Digital Technologies – SparkDigiGirls» το οποίο χρηματοδοτείται από το πρόγραμμα Erasmus+ Key Αction2 – Cooperation for innovation and the exchange of good practices/KA227 – Partnerships for Creativity και στοχεύει στην ενδυνάμωση της δημιουργικότητας των κοριτσιών μέσω της χρήσης ψηφιακών τεχνολογιών. Το έργο διαρκεί από την 1η Μαϊου 2021 έως την 30η Οκτωβρίου 2023. Συντονιστής φορέας είναι  ο Asociacija “Viesieji interneto prieigos taskai”(Rural Internet Access Points) (Λιθουανία) και  συμμετέχουν οι ακόλουθοι εταίροι: Informaciniu Technologiju Instituta (Λιθουανία), DAISSy Research Group του Ελληνικού Ανοικτού Πανεπιστημίου (Ελλάδα), Instituto Politecnico de Tomar (Πορτογαλία) και Simbioza Genesis Social Entreprise (Σλοβενία).

Το έργο στοχεύει στην ενθάρρυνση των κοριτσιών ηλικίας 15+ ετών ώστε  να εξερευνήσουν ψηφιακές τεχνολογίες όπως AR, VR, AI, IoT και να βρουν νέες και συναρπαστικές ιδέες χρησιμοποιώντας την ψηφιακή γνώση που θα αποκτήσουν  για να καταγράψουν στα νερά της ανδροκρατούμενης βιομηχανίας STEM  φρέσκιες, διαφορετικές και δημιουργικές απόψεις και προσεγγίσεις. Οι επιμέρους στόχοι του έργου είναι:

• να μειώσει τις ανησυχίες των κοριτσιών και να απομυθοποιήσει τα υφιστάμενα στερεότυπα σχετικά με την επιστήμη της πληροφορικής και την τεχνολογία
• να αυξήσει τις δεξιότητες ψηφιακού γραμματισμού για τα κορίτσια ώστε να  ανοίξουν νέες και απρόβλεπτες δυνατότητες για τη δημιουργικότητα και  τη συμμετοχή τους στον ψηφιακό κόσμο
• να ενδυναμώσει νέους και νέες εργαζόμενους/-ες ώστε να λειτουργήσουν ως μέντορες για τη στήριξη της δημιουργικότητας των κοριτσιών μέσω της χρήσης ψηφιακών εφαρμογών και την αύξηση της ελκυστικότητας του ψηφιακού τομέα μεταξύ των κοριτσιών Τα αναμενόμενα αποτελέσματα του έργου είναι πολυδιάστατα για τους συμμετέχοντες οργανισμούς, τα κορίτσια ηλικίας 15 και άνω, τους νέους και τις νέες εργαζόμενες μέντορες, το εκπαιδευτικό προσωπικό της δευτεροβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης και τους φορείς της δευτεροβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης (Γυμνάσια και Λύκεια, ΠΕΚΕΣ, φορείς χάραξης εκπαιδευτικής πολιτικής κ.λπ.)
