About the ICTSkills4ALL project

ICTskills4All is coordinated by the University of Porto and involves a total of 5 partners from 5 countries (Portugal, Poland, Latvia, UK, and Belgium). The aim of the project is to develop and pilot an intergenerational and peer-to-peer ICT Learning Programme to improve confidence, digital skills and online safety of older people with no or basic digital skills in four of the project countries.

About the Event

With an increasing aging population, older people are a significantly important segment of society who cannot be left behind. And within the older demographic, the very old are growing fastest. However, almost all digital technology consumer products and services are designed, produced and exclusively marketed by and for younger people. In parallel with this disconnect, older people are already most likely to be victims of cybercrime, with the greatest losses. Policymakers must consider this with the technology industry and build education frameworks to support older peoples’ adoption of technology.

The economic impact of digitally excluding older people is very hard to measure, but not only must older people be protected and empowered by technology, they must be a key part of the digital world of the future. If this is not addressed, in future older people will be less independent, less creative, contribute less economically (further fuelling the pension crisis), be more isolated and more disconnected.

The event will discuss the ICTSkills4All project, its approach and findings, as well as hear from older people themselves. It will include the perspectives of politicians and policy makers, the sector representing older people and industry to consider how lessons and policy recommendations for older people can be adopted. Prof. Achilles Kameas will open the event.

This enriching panel discussion will bring together high-level speakers from the European Institutions and key stakeholders working in the field of digital inclusion to share their insights on how to better include older people in our digital society during and after Covid-19 pandemic. Panelists will be invited to consider the issues above, present good practices examples and reflect on the strategies addressing the great challenges related to digital literacy and the place given to digital inclusion of older people on the EU agenda.

RE-EDUCO – Rethinking educational competences – 1st virtual meeting

On November 16th, the first virtual meeting of the ReEDUCO “Rethinking Education Competencies” project, co-financed by the Erasmus + program of the European Commission, took place online.

The international consortium is composed by Link Campus University, Italian Digital Revolution (Italy), Hellenic Open University (Greece), Omnia (Finland), Cyprus Computer Society (Cyprus) and Insomnia consulting (Spain).

The meeting allowed the partners involved to introduce themselves and share skills, methodologies and tools for the development of the activities that will follow in the coming months. During the meeting, the foundations of the first phases of the project were laid.

The RE-EDUCO project promotes the production, experimentation and sharing of new approaches and training methods in digital innovation. Through research, the exchange of good practices, training and creative activities, the role of digital culture is strengthened as a means to improve the growth opportunities for students and teachers.

ESSA kick off Meeting

essa-kickOn the 2nd of December 2020, the Hellenic Open University and in particular, the DAISSy research Group, participated in the virtual kick-off meeting of the ESSA project.

The European Software Skills Alliance (ESSA), an alliance of 26 software sector partners, brings together key industry and education stakeholders from across the domain. Following the European Commission’s call, the ESSA partners will work together to design and implement the new Software Skills Strategy and VET curriculum for Europe that will tackle the current and future skills shortages in the European Software Sector, driving the growth of software in Europe.

A data-driven Software Skills Strategy based on market needs

The shift from hardware to software is enabling a broader range of new services, accompanied by emerging technologies such as Cloud Computing, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of things (IoT), Blockchain and Cybersecurity. These are driving the high demand for software in Europe and globally, and consequently the growing demand for more professionals in software services.

The ESSA, led by DIGITALEUROPE, unites leading Information and Communications Technology (ICT) representative bodies, software services employers, education and training providers from VET and Higher Education, qualifications regulatory bodies including national accreditation agencies, and a broad selection of stakeholders and social partners from across the industry.

HOU is responsible for contributing to the development of software skills, evaluation and piloting of results.

All partners will work together to ensure that the new Software Skills Strategy is driven by employers’ demand for software skills and combines VET education provision and work-based learning initiatives to implement fast-track upskilling and reskilling. The new strategy and VET solution are directly linked with recognised European instruments, tools and standards enabling skills and career development in general. In addition, new mechanisms will be included to ensure the continuous implementation across programme countries throughout four years of the project and beyond its completion.

New EU-wide VET solution to tackle software skills shortage

The rapidly increasing skills gap and ever-changing technical requirements make it difficult for education and training to keep up. In other words, the growing demand for skilled specialists in software services cannot be fulfilled by the current education and training programmes. Technological innovation has changed the paradigm of the way software and IT infrastructure are being designed, delivered and managed, such as automation or growing software support functions. Therefore, shorter and more efficient education cycles are needed. VET is considered as an applicable format, which enables better alignment with industry and employers’ needs in real time and more flexible learning pathways.

With a focus on advanced digital and ICT professional skills in the area of software services, the ESSA aims to develop innovative and comprehensive VET curriculum customised for various role and job profiles and underlying competences, knowledge and skills needed in the sector. An analysis of market and business needs will be conducted at the beginning of the project in order to prepare a concrete data-based foundation for the development and implementation of both the Software Skills Strategy and the VET programmes. The curriculum and learning materials will equip learners with up-to-date knowledge and skills required to perform advanced digital and ICT professional competences as well as recognised certifications that are transferable across the EU.

For a sustainable development beyond the end of the ESSA project, a long-term strategy will be developed for the ongoing expansion of the Alliance as well as the continuous improvements of the Software Skills Strategy and VET programmes. Additionally, a European Software Skills Community will be created to provide an online platform for expert reviews and exchange of ideas and best practices among the wide software sector and VET community, ensuring the EU-wide adoption and exploitation of the project’s outcomes.

DAISSy-HOU links BIBLIO with EUHeritage EU project!

biblio-logoDAISSy Research Group of the Hellenic Open University (#DAISSy #HOU), the Greek project partner, links BIBLIO (#digitalskills , @DigitalBiblio) with “EUHeritage” EU project currently undergoing (601073-EPP-1-2018-1-IT-EPPKA2-SSA).

More precisely, the EUHeritage project (Skills for promotion, valorization, exploitation, mediation and interpretation of European Cultural Heritage) aims to contribute to innovative and cross-disciplinary approaches, so as to create a new transnational curriculum for cultural heritage professionals, focused on digital skills, transferable and transversal competences, soft skills and skills connected to “experience tourism” in the field of Cultural Heritage (CH).

  • This will be achieved first by identifying the necessary competences and the skills required for the cultural heritage professionals, then by developing the occupational core profiles for professionals employed in the field of CH (level 5 and 6 EQF) and by providing targeted training together with a set of assorted tools. The report analysis is already available online through the EUHeritage’s website.
  • The training will be built on three pillars i.e. cultural heritage, experience tourism and digital dimension, with the outer goal to create and produce innovative experiences for tourists and local communities for a sustainable promotion of  CH using digital dimension developing participation and  links with creative communities. The course will be on-line during spring 2021.
  • The tools will include an instructional meta-methodology, where new scenarios will be included that the pandemic situation activated in the cultural and tourism contexts: new paradigms of interpretation needed, in order to rethink the products, the demand, the activities of the offer and the policies to re-launch destinations and sites!

euheritage-logoIt is noteworthy, that the EUHeritage e-platform will be created under Creative Commons licenses and Open Educational Resources – it is expected to foster the cooperation of the CH sector with other sectors and industries, in particular technology, tourism, SMEs, and Creative and Cultural industries, to allow further scope for creativity, innovation and sustainability.

The #BIBLIO and #EUHeritage findings will be transferred bilaterally and effectively by DAISSy Research Group of HOU within the implementation period, so that the beneficiaries of both projects fully gain from this valuable exchange of experience (https://www.biblio-project.eu/stories/euheritage-project/).

INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE IN A EVALUATION SURVEY OF THE COMPETENCE FRAMEWORK FOR STE(A)M EDUCATORS

steam-evalOur project  STEAMonEdu – “Competence development of STE(A)M educators through online tools and communities”  aims to increase the adoption and impact of STE(A)M education by investing in the professional development of educators and in establishing a community of stakeholders.

To this end, the project drafted a Competence Framework for STE(A)M Educators, which

  • summarizes the set of competences needed to realize STE(A)M education,
  • provides links to other competence frameworks, and
  • can serve as the basis for planning the professional development of STE(A)M educators.

We are inviting to participate in the evaluation of the Framework!

The online survey aims to validate and possibly enhance the Competence Framework for STE(A)M educators. We are looking for responses from:

  • educators, researchers, school managers/directors, policy makers and other stakeholders
  • of all levels of education
  • from different organizations, regions, and countries

The survey is available in seven languages:

It should take about 20-30 min to complete the survey, depending on how familiar someone is with the topic. But it is possible to work on it in different sessions because the tool allows you to “save now and continue later”.

XENIA consortium launches a message against Gender-Based Violence (GBV)

xenia-logoXENIA international consortium commemorates two days dedicated to the fight against gender-based violence worldwide. Annually November celebrates the TDoR – Transgender Day of Remembrance on day 20th to memorialize transgender people who have been murdered and the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on 25th.

Are these two days united by a common thread? First of all, which women are included (or excluded) in actions to prevent and combat gender-based violence?

Let’s take into consideration the word TRANS. It is not a noun, but an adjective. So when we talk about women, in the same way we should talk about white women and women of colour, skilled and disabled women, so we also should talk about cisgender and transgender women.

In official statistics on GBV the gender variable is always expressed in the “male” and “female” modalities, but transgender and non-binary people are invisible.

The Erasmus+ XENIA project with its 7 partners from 5 different European countries commemorates all the victims and survivors of misogynistic and transphobic gender-based violence and stresses the common matrix of these two expressions of violence found in the male chauvinist, genderist and patriarchal culture.

XENIA believes that educational tools are crucial to prevent gender-based violence and to promote a culture respectful of diversity. And it also supports the importance of producing scientific knowledge and empirical evidence on the topic, in order to advocate and give tools to policy makers for the creation of inclusive anti-violence policies.

Presentation on the STEAMonEdu project at this year’s International Conference of Education, Research and Innovation (ICERI2020)

On 9th and 10th of November, at the International Conference of Education, Research and Innovation (ICERI2020), Achilles Kameas and Natalia Spyropoulou, members of the STEAMonEdu project team of Computer Technology Institute and Press “Diophantus” (CTI), presented online two scientific papers based on the results of the STEAMonEdu project.

The first paper, entitled “Professional Development Of STE(A)M Educators with Online Tools And Communities” summarized preliminary results of the STEAMonEdu project. The overview of the research issues was provided, alongside with the methodology and achievements of the STEAMonEdu project and its expected impact and key results. In the following table, the key results of the project are summarized:

The second paper entitled “A Holistic Framework Of STE(A)M Educators Competences“, focused on the development of the Competence framework for STE(A)M educators. The paper described the different areas and dimensions based on the different role that an educator.  In addition, the potential usefulness of the framework was described. More specifically, the design of the STE(A)M competence framework for educators, has two specific aims: Firstly, it must be usable by educators for self-evaluation and self-regulation purposes as a self-assessment tool in order to educators evaluate themselves and find specific competences that they need to improve. Secondly, it must allow for both the support and professional development of STE(A)M educators, both as a guide for the formulation of the learning outcomes of specific training programs and as an assessment tool for the evaluation of the training program.
