BIBLIO exploits the valuable experience of Mu.SA. project

photo-BIBLIO and MuSAProject Mu.SA: Museum Sector Alliance targeted the museum sector and addressed the skill gaps and increasing disconnection between the formal education (and training) and the employment sector, which are mainly due to the emergence of new job roles and the quickening pace of the adoption of ICT in the sector. Mu.SA was coordinated by Hellenic Open University–DAISSy Research Group (GR) and was implemented between 2016 and 2020 under the Erasmus+ Sector Skills Alliances framework by a consortium of eleven partners from Greece, Italy, Portugal and Belgium.

Project Mu.SA created and offered a set of online and offline learning opportunities and contributed to the development of essential digital skills by museum professionals. Firstly, the project described four emerging job profiles: Digital Strategy Manager, Digital Collections Curator, Digital Interactive Experience Developer and Online Community Manager. A complete training curriculum was designed and implemented for each of them, consisting of two major stages: a MOOC, which was common for all profiles, followed by a blended course, which was specialized for each profile; the last stage of the course included an extensive workplace learning phase.

The Mu.SA training methodology, shortly presented in this article,  provides an excellent basis for BIBLIO! It is true that the two projects share common characteristics and that is the reason why, they are strongly interrelated. The Massive Open Online course (MOOC) entitled “Essential Digital Skills for Museum Professionals” is especially designed for the museum community, targeting professionals, students, volunteers and unemployed, who wanted to pursue their future career in the museum sector. The Mu.SA MOOC is a flexible, self-paced course organized in modules that allows trainees to develop a set of 22 core digital and transferable competences required for the museum sector.

The Mu.SA MOOC extends over eight (8) weeks of training, each week consisting of 2-3 training modules. For each one of the 22 competences, a separate training module has been designed, the material of which was grouped into units, which include presentations, videos and study material related to a set of learning outcomes that are assessed at the end of the module. Each week focuses on one competence coming from e-CF (the European standard of IT competences) and combines related competences from DigComp (the global standard of digital literacy of the average citizen) and P21 (a 21st century skill model) frameworks. Beyond the ability to develop digital strategy, digital content or use digital tools and platforms, trainees advance their skills like time management, communication, team-working, leadership and creative thinking. During the deployment of the MOOC, online tutors monitored, assisted and facilitated learners’ training. Once enrolled, trainees had guided access to all videos, quizzes, and assignments. A dedicated training platform based on the popular Moodle platform was developed by the HOU-DAISSy Research Group and the course was designed so as to facilitate active participation, peer-learning and open discussion among the course participants. After the completion of the training course, successful learners were able to develop and use digital and transferable competences necessary for professionals working in the museum sector. The instructional design was based on learning outcomes and was modular, in order to allow each trainee to study based on his / her pace and availability.

The Mu.SA MOOC is a unique combination of the European Frameworks and standards, and for this reason it is considered as best practice at European level. The impressive element in the Mu.SA training course was that the enrollment to the MOOC attracted more than 5.000 people from more than 45 countries from all around the world! After the successful completion of the MOOC, almost 1400 people [coming from Greece (400 people), Italy (491), Portugal (137) and other countries (371)] were certified, having attended more than 80% of the whole course and succeeding in at least 80% of graded activities; all candidates were able to download their digital certification through the Moodle Platform.

Learners who successfully completed the MOOC were eligible to continue their learning journey by applying for an advanced, six-month specialization course. Selected students, based on specific criteria, could choose a specialization training in one of the four emerging job profiles: Digital Strategy Manager, Digital Collections Curator, Digital Interactive Experience Developer and Online Community Manager. Open Educational Resources (OERs) were offered in these four specialized courses, for a total of 27 digital competences, 21 (e-CF) and 6 (DigComp) as well as 15 transferable competences, through blended learning (e-learning and face-to-face lectures) and work-based learning in a museum in Greece, Italy or Portugal. A total of 79 museum professionals completed the course successfully and were specialized in one the four job profiles. Forty two online selected OERs were designed and developed for Mu.SA courses and are available today.

It is noteworthy, that Mu.SA has been included in the DigComp User Guide (2018) as one of the 38 existing inspiring practices of DigComp implementations and it is selected as one of the 9 best cases that use DigComp for employment. In addition, Mu.SA project has been proposed as Good Practice under the “Initiative 8 – Heritage-related skills / Component 3: Opportunities for cultural heritage professionals” by European Commission. Recently (2020), Mu.SA project was included in the “DigComp at Work” report issued by EU, as best practice for implementing the DigComp framework for digital competences (!).

It is clear that the effective structure of Mu.SA methodology and the project accomplishments about applying the DigComp framework in the employment sector (for museums) provide an excellent example to be fully exploited and adjusted when developing the respective BIBLIO methodology for the library sector. The Mu.SA lessons learnt will be transferred effectively by HOU-DAISSy Reseach Group within the implementation of BIBLIO project, so that the current partnership and BIBLIO beneficiaries fully gain through this valuable experience.

Ενεργός συμμετοχή της DAISSy στη 2η Συνάντηση Συντονισμού του έργου BIBLIO

BIBLIO Sept meetingH Ερευνητική Ομάδα DAISSy του Ελληνικού Ανοικτού Πανεπιστημίου (ΕΑΠ), φορέας εταίρος του Ευρωπαϊκού έργου BIBLIO στην Ελλάδα, συμμετείχε ενεργά στη 2η διακρατική συνάντηση συντονισμού του έργου.

Η αρχικά προγραμματισμένη δια ζώσης, 2η διακρατική συνάντηση συντονισμού του εταιρικού σχήματος του έργου #DigitalBiblio, η οποία είχε προγραμματιστεί να λάβει χώρα στη Σόφια, τελικά πραγματοποιήθηκε διαδικτυακά στις 10 και 11 Σεπτεμβρίου 2020.

Στο επίκεντρο των εργασιών βρέθηκαν τα αποτελέσματα της ερευνητικής φάσης με την ολοκλήρωση της αναφοράς & για την ανάλυση των αναγκών κατάρτισης 1 στον τομέα των Βιβλιοθηκών, καθώς και η ανάπτυξη του περιεχομένου του προγράμματος σπουδών και η πρώτη φάση της εκπαίδευσης!

  • Η Ερευνητική Ομάδα DAISSy του ΕΑΠ, παρουσίασε την προτεινόμενη δομή και περιεχόμενο του σχετικού MOOC που προβλέπεται ως ένα από τα παραδοτέα του έργου BIBLIO. Στόχος είναι η δημιουργία ενός σύγχρονου MOOC που θα υποστηρίξει την ανάπτυξη των Βιβλιοθηκών και των ικανοτήτων των επαγγελματιών του χώρου, διασφαλίζοντας τη δυνατότητά του (MOOC) να προσελκύει και να εξυπηρετεί αποτελεσματικά και αποδοτικά τους επαγγελματίες των Βιβλιοθηκών.
  • Έμφαση θα δοθεί στην ενεργό εμπλοκή όλων (εκπαιδευτών, εκπαιδευομένων και προσωπικού των Βιβλιοθηκών) ώστε τουλάχιστον 400 άτομα από τις χώρες εταίρους (Ιταλία, Βουλγαρία, Λετονία, Βέλγιο και Ελλάδα) να αξιοποιήσουν το MOOC και να το αξιολογήσουν, δίνοντας τις παρατηρήσεις τους. Όσα άτομα ολοκληρώσουν επιτυχώς το MOOC, θα έχουν τη δυνατότητα να συνεχίσουν την κατάρτισή τους σε επόμενο στάδιο του έργου.
  • Η DAISSy συντονίζει την υλοποίηση του εν λόγω παραδοτέου, καθώς διαθέτει, μεταξύ άλλων, πολυετή, συναφή, αξιόλογη εμπειρία στο σχεδιασμό και υλοποίηση MOOC, που εγγυάται ποιοτικό αποτέλεσμα για το έργο BIBLIO.

DAISSy Research Group of the Hellenic Open University (HOU) at the national Education Sector Working Group

mile-logo-300x215In the framework of MILE – Migrants Integration in the Labor Market in Europe project, DAISSy Research Group of the Hellenic Open University (HOU) actively participates in the meetings of the national Education Sector Working Group (ESWG) organized and hosted by Greece I UNICEF with the participation of a large number of interested Bodies that are actively involved in Migration specific actions.

Target of the ESWG is to inform and coordinate participants on the relevant issues at the national level. Specifically, main objectives of the ESWG are the coordination of the actions of Bodies dealing with issues of Formal, Non-Formal and Informal Education concerning Migrants in Greece, and the dissemination of relevant information.

The ESWG meetings that used to take place on a periodic basis (per week or per two weeks), since the beginning of the COVID 19 crisis turned online in an effort to cope with the multiple implications caused at this period. From March 16 till this day, more than 15 ESWG meetings have taken place online. DAISSy Research Group has participated in the total of the meetings in an effort to be constantly updated about the situation in Greece as well as in order to promote all MILE relevant actions.


Greek case study on the role of STE(A)M educators presented at IISA Conference

steamoneduiisa2020On July 17, at the IISA2020 Conference, Natalia Spyropoulou and Achilles Kameas, members of the STEAMonEdu project team of Daissy Research TeamComputer Technology Institute and Press “Diophantus” (CTI), presented the scientific paper “Investigating the role of STE(A)M Educators: a case study in Greece”.

The IISA (Information, Intelligence, Systems and Applications) Conference was the eleventh in a series of international conferences, which offers a forum for the constructive interaction and prolific exchange of ideas among scientists and practitioners from different research fields – such as computers, mathematics, physics, biology, education, chemistry, experimental psychology, social sciences, linguistics, and engineering.

The presented paper summarized a study that compares the outcomes of previous research with the results of a survey of 59 Greek educators, who have implemented STE(A)M-related courses. Based on the responses through the specially designed close-ended questionnaire, the educators’ perceptions were identified and analyzed. Based on these, the authors assessed the importance of different traits and competences that a STE(A)M educator should have. Furthermore, the research showed evidence that there are some differences in educators’ perceptions depending on their academic background, mostly on teaching and professional development aspects.

The presentation led to a fruitful exchange of ideas during the discussion that followed, also causing strong interest of the participants for the activities and future actions of STEAMonEdu project related to the development of the competence framework for STE(A)M educators and the training curriculum to support their professional development.

INVITATION for participants in the framework of MILE – Migrants Integration in the Labor Market in Europe project

mile-logo-300x215DAISSy Research Group of the Hellenic Open University (HOU) releases an Open Call for expression of interest in the framework of MILE project. The Call concerns the provision of a customized training and job support program, it targets immigrantsrefugees and asylum seekers in Attica and it includes:

a. skills assessment process, including the EU Skills Profile Tool for third-country nationals

b. consulting support for the development of soft skills such as:

  • Communication
  • Teamwork
  • IT
  • tackling discrimination
  • national labor market and employment legislation in Greece, etc.

c. technical training for participants that will be matched with the labor market needs

Registration form:

The Registration form will remain open until the entry places are filled. The aim of the total interventions in Greece  is to offer guidance and training services to 120 immigrants and refugees in order to make them employable. In addition, a subsidy is provided for the employment of a total of 30 immigrants and refugees for one month.

The MILE project is co-funded by the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF) of the European Union, and it aims to develop, implement and make wider use of an effective model for the integration of migrants and refugees into the labor market, based on the cooperation of many stakeholders. MILE actions are developed based on the needs of both employers and immigrants.

On Thursday, August 27th, XENIA: HEIs Inclusiveness Index project partners met to start preparing one of the most important tasks of the project: the definition of the key elements for assessing the Inclusiveness levels of Higher Education Institutions in Europe. This work package will be Coordinated by SInAPSI-University of Naples “Federico II”.

BIBLIO interviews in Greece: digital transformation of the libraries’ services

biblio-logoΤhe results of the BIBLIO research on competencies and training needs of the library professionals in Greece are out! From the quantitative part, the survey conducted, these include:
  • 80 professionals with an EQF-6 average educational background took part in the survey and 71% of them indicate 30 years of work experience on the average.
  • 78% declared that their skills and knowledge need to be updated to complete their responsibilities.
  • Among them, there are the elderly (37%), the students (29%) and the young people of less than 18 years of age (25%), who mostly wish for more digital activities!
More precisely, top priority theme turns out to be the social media management and the marketing of library activities whereas, the survey participants also express their five top preferences on training themes, i.e. exploration of technological changes, measurement and evaluation of library services, digitization, community assessment, library marketing and communications.

The in-depth interviews (qualitative part) held with librarians, electrical engineers and users, showed that both libraries’ professionals and users are not yet accustomed to the digital changes in libraries. Specific points made included that: libraries have always been implementing digital services; technology has been an integral part within the operation of modern ones. In fact, the digital transformation embraces and empowers the current practices of libraries and makes their resources available to users on a very high scale – so, the traditional services are actually maintained but expanded by using digital techniques and tools, in order to outreach to a larger audience through a faster and more effective way.

Furthermore, the findings indicate that there is a positive impact on the staff, users and services of a library by implementing digital changes. However, the library staff needs to be properly trained in order to get used to this changing environment. It has also been pointed out that it is important to a modern librarian to receive specialized training experience instead of just exploring on his/her own the available digital tools and applications.

Last but not least, the situations emerged in 2020, during the quarantine of COVD-19 in Greece, pointed out the dynamic range of digital applications but also the operational needs of the technical systems as well as the needs of library staff and users for familiarizing more with the use of modern ICT.

The research was completed by DAISSy Research Group of Hellenic Open University (HOU), the BIBLIO partner in Greece, supported by the Distance Library and Information Center (D.L.I.C.) of the HOU between March 30 and June 30th 2020.

STEAMonEdu at the EDEN 2020 Conference

eden2020On 22 June, at the European Distance and e-Learning Network (EDEN) Conference, Natalia Spyropoulou and Achilles Kameas, members of the STEAMonEdu project team of DAISSy Research Group, presented the scientific paper “Methodology for the Development of a Competence Framework for STE(A)M Educators”.

The EDEN2020 is an annual conference organized by European Distance and e-Learning Network and aims to maximise the potential to exchange academic and professional experience, to promote effective navigation in the field, and improve the quality and depth of information available to the sectors concerned. This year, the conference focused on “Inspiring digital education for the next STE(A)M student generation” and took place online, due to the pandemic.

The STE(A)MonEdu Project aims to increase the adoption and impact of STE(A)M education by investing in the community of stakeholders and the professional development of educators. Focusing on the professional development of educators, it aims firstly to compile a competence framework for STE(A)M educators and then design appropriate training offers.

Τhe presented paper summarized, a brief overview concerning the competency-based perspective, in order at first, to identify the challenges of and the current research within this topic for STE(A)M education and then to provide the methodology for the development of the Competence Framework for STE(A)M Educators, based on a modified Delphi technique where educators take part during the development phases.

After the presentation a fruitful discussion was followed, where attendees asked more information about the activities and future actions related to STEAMonEdu project.

Το έργο Mu.SA συμπεριλήφθηκε στον Ευρωπαϊκό οδηγό DigComp at Work

MuSA_finalΜε χαρά και υπερηφάνεια ανακοινώνουμε ότι το έργο Mu.SA: Museum Sector Alliance ( συμπεριλήφθηκε ως καλή πρακτική εφαρμογής του πλαισίου ψηφιακών ικανοτήτων DigComp στον οδηγό DigComp at Work, ο οποίος μόλις δημοσιεύτηκε από την ΕΕ (μπορείτε να δείτε την ανακοίνωση εδώ).

Το έργο Mu.SA ολοκληρώθηκε με μεγάλη επιτυχία τον περασμένο Απρίλιο υπό τον συντονισμό της ερευνητικής ομάδας DAISSy του ΕΑΠ ( και τη συμμετοχή 11 φορέων από τις χώρες Ελλάδα, Ιταλία, Πορτογαλία και Βέλγιο. Στο πλαίσιο του έργου σχεδιάστηκαν 4 νέα επαγγελματικά προφίλ και προσφέρθηκε ένα ολοκληρωμένο πρόγραμμα κατάρτισης, το οποίο περιελάμβανε ένα MOOC, 4 specialization courses και workplace learning, με σκοπό την αναβάθμιση των δεξιοτήτων (up-skilling) των επαγγελματιών των μουσείων. Οι εγγραφές στο MOOC ξεπέρασαν τα 5.000 άτομα, ενώ περισσότερα από 100 εξ αυτών συμμετείχαν και στα υπόλοιπα στάδια.

Στον οδηγό DigComp at Work, το έργο Mu.SA αναφέρεται ως βέλτιστη πρακτική εφαρμογής του πλαισίου ικανοτήτων DigComp (Digital Competences Framework for Citizens) σε συνδυασμό με το πρότυπο ικανοτήτων e-CF (European eCompetences Framework). Στο σχεδιασμό της κατάρτισης συμπεριλήφθηκαν και ικανότητες του 21ου αιώνα, παρέχοντας ένα ολιστικό πλαίσιο επαγγελματικής ανάπτυξης στους συμμετέχοντες στις δράσεις κατάρτισης.

Το πλαίσιο DigComp καθορίζει το τι χρειάζεται κανείς για να είναι ψηφιακά ικανό άτομο. Αποτελεί ένα σημείο αναφοράς για τον προσδιορισμό των αναγκών δεξιοτήτων, την αξιολόγηση των ικανοτήτων και την καταλογογράφηση, την ανάπτυξη και την παροχή ψηφιακών δεξιοτήτων. Η πρόσφατα δημοσιευμένη Ευρωπαϊκή Ατζέντα Δεξιοτήτων ( υπογραμμίζει ότι οι δεξιότητες είναι βασικές για την ανάκαμψη και ότι οι άνθρωποι πρέπει να είναι σε θέση να αποκτήσουν τη σωστή εκπαίδευση και κατάρτιση για να ευδοκιμήσουν στη ζωή. Η Ατζέντα περιγράφει διάφορες δράσεις για την ανάπτυξη των ψηφιακών ικανοτήτων. Με αφορμή τη δημοσίευση του οδηγού, η Mariya Gabriel, Επίτροπος για την Καινοτομία, την Έρευνα, τον Πολιτισμό, την Εκπαίδευση και τη Νεολαία, υπεύθυνη για το Κοινό Κέντρο Ερευνών (JRC), πρόσθεσε: «Τους τελευταίους μήνες, η κοινωνική απόσταση έχει αλλάξει τον τρόπο που συνδέουμε, ερευνούμε και καινοτομούμε στην εργασία – και πρέπει να εξοπλίσουμε άτομα με τις σωστές ψηφιακές δεξιότητες για να συνεχίσουν να εργάζονται έτσι».
